• Brew 9/5/13

    This was a fun, if hectic brew day. I should say brew night, as we got it done after work and it took us until about midnight! I had to run all the way back to my house to pick up the grain after I’d already arrived with all the other supplies at Phil’s house.

    Phil and I have been brewing together since 2009, sporadically. We launched into it with about $100 of equipment and a kit. We were some combination of too busy and too unmotivated to start brewing with all grain (rather than using pre-made malt extract) until last year. For various reasons, this was the first time we’ve brewed in about 6 months.

  • How Barbara Kingsolver Almost Ruined My Life

    I’ve been a long-time fan of Barbara Kingsolver.  I have read most all of her books, except The Poisonwood Bible, and I don’t know why I haven’t read that one.  I think my favorite has to be Prodigal Summer.  Who knew moth copulation could be put down so beautifully on paper?  She’s a lyrical writer, and I relish every sentence as if it’s a morsel of the finest chocolate (fair trade chocolate, of course.  Just kidding.  I’ve never seen fair trade chocolate in Metropolitan St. Louis, although I have not looked.).  She is fantastic.  A friend, when describing Kingsolver’s books, introduced me to the word “polemic.”  I’m sure Kingsolver seems that way to some.  Oh, heck:  She is polemic.  It is true. 

    BUT, that she is polemic and writes beautifully about moth sex is not what almost ruined my life.  [Read More…]

  • Green on Green salad

    My CSA day is Tuesday. This week I got some great summer crisp lettuce, as well as some Hakurei turnips, cucumbers, summer squash, celery, bell peppers, and tomatoes. More on CSA in a later post.
